Knee replacement surgery or Knee Arthroplasty is carried out in case of knee joint that is severely damaged to an extent that other non surgical modalities do not work and everyday activity of the person is hampered. It involves the replacement of the damaged part with the artificial implants or prosthesis which could be either made up of metal or plastic.
It could be Total knee replacement or partial knee replacement. Total knee replacement surgery comprises of the replacement of the damaged bone and cartilage in all the three compartments of the knee joint whereas partial knee replacement selectively removes the damaged tissues in one compartment, usually the medial compartment and replaces them with artificial implants.
The selection of the most appropriate candidate for either surgery depends upon the factors such as the site and degree of the damage in the knee joint. Your surgeon will take the crucial decision about the type of surgery required for you.
Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for undergoing Total knee replacement surgery. Total knee replacement surgery is one of the most common joint replacement surgeries. Scientific studies have shown good success rate with 90 to 95 percent of the people satisfied and rather happy after 1 yr of surgery.
