Restrictive and minimally invasive weight loss surgery involves the placement of an adjustable inflatable silicone band around the top part of the stomach in order to create a small stomach pouch that restricts the amount of food one can ingest before feeling full.

A small opening between the newly created stomach pouch and the rest of the stomach through which the food travels slowly leads to early satiety.

The constriction of the band can be adjusted by inflating it with saline (salt solution) injected into it through a small port placed under the skin of the abdomen.

The adjustable inflatable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach and attached with a tube that is accessed through the small port placed under the belly skin.

It is an FDA-approved weight loss procedure that helps a person to lose weight and an added benefit is improved Diabetes. Weight loss is variable for each person.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) weight loss surgery is commonly referred to as LAP-Band surgery.

Its increasing popularity may be attributed to the fact that it is the least invasive procedure among all weight loss surgeries currently performed. It is an effective and relatively safe bariatric surgery.

Q1. What does Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Procedure (LAGB) involve?

A1. The laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric band procedure involves the placement of an adjustable band around the top part of the stomach which is connected to the food pipe or esophagus. The constriction of the band can be adjusted by inflating it with saline(salt solution) injected into it through a small port placed under the skin of the abdomen.

This band creates a small stomach pouch and restricts the amount of food one can ingest before feeling full.

Moreover, creates a small opening between the newly created stomach pouch and the rest of the stomach through which the food travels slowly leading to early satiety.

In order to prevent the band from slipping, a small part of the stomach is stitched around it on its both sides.

The surgeon accesses the surgical site through a few keyhole incisions in the abdomen and inserts the band through a special hollow tube called a cannula placed in your abdomen at the time of the surgery.

Once reached the top part of the stomach where it is connected to the food pipe the bariatric surgeon passes the band around the stomach creating a small pouch that can hold only 1 to 2 ounces of food.

Once in place, the surgeon will secure it firmly by locking it and stitching part of the stomach immediately below the band to the part of the stomach just above the band. This prevents slipping of the band.

Then, one end of the tube is pulled out through the hollow tube referred to as canula and connected to the injection port positioned under the skin.

This surgery does not modify the digestive process. Food ingested, passes through the digestive tract in a normal way. You need to visit the surgeon often to get the band adjusted.

Q2 What are the benefits of Gastric Banding Surgery?

A2 Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding procedure offers the following benefits:

  • Completely reversible procedure

  • Minimally invasive procedure

  • Requires short hospital stay

  • Absorption of the food nutrients is not compromised

  • Normal digestion is not altered.

  • Constriction of the band can be adjusted thereby adjusting the intake of the food as well.

Q3 What kind of anesthesia is given for gastric banding weight loss surgery?

A3 The Gastric banding Surgery or Lap band weight loss surgery is performed under general anesthesia wherein the patient is put to sleep.

Q4 How long does the Lap-band weight loss surgery take?

A4 Usually, Gastric banding weight loss surgery takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Q5 How long is the hospital stay for Gastric Banding weight loss surgery?

A5 Usually, an overnight hospital stay may be required. Lately, it is being done as the same day or daycare surgery. The work can generally be resumed in a week's time.

Q6 How the lap band is adjusted after the Lap-Band procedure?

A6 The adjustment of the Lap-Band is done at the doctor's office wherein he either injects saline or removes some through the access port placed under the skin in your abdomen. This is called"Adjustment" or a "Fill". It is a quick, simple, and painless procedure.

Q7 Is it possible to achieve my ideal body weight?

A7 Yes, it is possible to achieve your ideal body weight, though slow, unlike other weight-loss surgeries in which the weight loss is quick and drastic. You still have to strictly follow lifestyle changes in order to get the desired results. Lap-Band surgery helps you control portion size, small portions are enough to satiate your hunger.

Q8 Once I achieve my ideal body weight, can I get the Lap-Band removed?

A8 You have achieved your ideal body weight.

Ideally, Lap-band is meant to be in place for good for the desired results to sustain, even though it is a reversible weight loss procedure i.e., the adjustable band can be removed laparoscopically if need be, but the results will be reversed too.

The small portion size of the meals is no longer going to satiate your hunger. On the contrary, you may start eating larger portions.

Q9 Is there any likelihood of allergy due to this foreign material in my body?

A9 As of now, no cases of allergy have been reported, after the Lap-band procedure.
