Liver cancer can be either primary or secondary. Primary Liver cancer is the cancer that originates in the liver whereas the secondary liver cancer or the metastatic cancer is the one that starts in some other organ such as lungs, colon or breast, however, spread to the liver eventually. The most common type of liver cancer is Hepatocellular Carcinoma.
Early stage of primary liver cancer may go unnoticeable.
Symptoms of liver cancer may be unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, jaundice, abdominal swelling, fatigue, upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and white chalky stool.
Generally, the cause of liver cancer is long standing liver damage or scarring of liver referred to as cirrhosis.
Cirrhosis may be caused due to excessive alcohol intake, viral infection of the liver(Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C), chronic inflammation in the liver, autoimmune disease of the liver where your own immunity attacks your body cells and hemochromatosis(iron overload in the body).
Liver cancer is more common in men than women and usually in people who are 50 yrs or above
